Highlights from 112 Years of ŠKODA Motorsports at Goodwood

11/07/2013
ŠKODA 1101 Sport, ŠKODA 130 RS and ŠKODA Fabia WRC at the starting line. ŠKODA presents three legends from a 112-year history in motorsports. New ŠKODA Octavia RS celebrates its world premiere at Goodwood. 20th anniversary of the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
ŠKODA will be out in force at the Goodwood Festival of Speed from 11th to 14th of July, 2013. Alongside the world premiere of the new ŠKODA Octavia RS, the Czech car maker will be presenting three fantastic highlights from the company’s 112-year history in motorsports at the racetrack – the ŠKODA 1101 Sport, the ŠKODA 130 RS and the ŠKODA Fabia WRC rally car.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed will be taking place this year for the 20th time.  With around 150,000 visitors from all over the world, the event in Goodwood, southern England, is the world's largest historic motorsports event. Historic and current racing cars from all categories will be presented on the 1.7 km on-site mountain course as well as on a custom rally route.

“Since the company was first founded, motorsport has been a driving force for ŠKODA to excel both on the racing track and in technical development,” says ŠKODA CEO Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. He continues, “Our founding fathers were pioneers in mobility and, like many people, were captivated by speed. Since these beginnings, ŠKODA has celebrated many successes in motorsports, including our current victories in international rally sport. We are very proud of our successful motorsport tradition and will be displaying three outstanding representatives of this history at Goodwood.

The ŠKODA 1101 Sport was the first ŠKODA racing car after the Second World War, and was built in 1950 for the 24-hour race at Le Mans. The bodywork is made out of lightweight metal. To power the car, which weighs in at a mere 665 kg, is a four-cylinder, 1,498cc, 142 hp engine with a top speed of 215 km/h.

The ŠKODA 130 RS was one of the most successful racing cars of its time. Since its launch in 1975, the vehicle was a favourite at rallies and circuit racing until the early 1980s. As it was known at the time, the “Porsche of the East” has a number of victories under its belt, including victories at the Touring Car European Championships of 1981 and the double victory at the Monte-Carlo rally in 1977 in the up to 1,300cc category. The Czechs will be presenting a car from 1977 at Goodwood. The four-cylinder engine with 1,289cc capacity provides 139 hp. The top speed of this 130 RS is 200 km/h.

The final member of this historical racing car trio from Mladá Boleslav is the “Youngster” – the 2003 rally car ŠKODA Fabia WRC. Under the bonnet of the Fabia WRC is a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 1,999cc displacement and 300 hp. The all-wheel drive Fabia WRC was initially developed under the World Rally Car Regulations for the FIA and did very well in the World Rally Championships and national rally competitions until 2007. At Goodwood, the Fabia WRC will be racing on a special circuit where a separate competition for rally cars will be taking place. The 'Forest Rally Stage' is a 2.5km drive over a U-shaped gravel road through the forest.

In addition to participating with the three historic racing cars, ŠKODA will be celebrating the world premiere of the new ŠKODA Octavia RS at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The fastest Octavia ever – as a saloon and combi – offers powerful yet economical engines, sporty design and innovative technology. The latest ŠKODA Octavia RS accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 6.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 248 km/h – in a manual saloon. Two new engines are now available in the new ŠKODA Octavia RS – either a two-litre petrol engine with 162 kW (220hp), or a two-litre diesel engine with 135kW (184hp).

Evolution: ‘ŠKODA VisionC’ – the next stage in the development of ŠKODA design language. Design: Expressive, dynamic, confident, emotional. Concept: ŠKODA develops its first five-door coupé chassis. Characteristic of ŠKODA: Design meets functionality - Coupé with large hatch. Technology: Modern modular technology, low weight and optimized aerodynamics for responsible individual mobility. Environment: already meet the stringent EU2020 emissions standard using conventional technology - 91g CO2/km.
Spectacular coupé design study, new Octavia variants and greater model diversity.
ŠKODA presents the best-selling Octavia in Geneva; now with CNG drive. Bivalent engine runs on natural gas or petrol. Environmentally-friendly: only 5.4 m3 (3,5 kg) CNG per 100 km (97 g CO2/km). Refuelling king: up to 1,330 km with natural gas and petrol.
