ŠKODA Fabia awarded the Best First Car in Carsales Car of the Year Awards

11/11/2015
ŠKODA's all-new Fabia has claimed the title of Best First Car in the Carsales Car of the Year Awards.
Launched in July this year, the Fabia hatch and wagon brings a host of standard features to the market, including Front Assist with City Emergency Brake, rear parking sensors and was the first brand in Australia to offer Smartlink™ smartphone connectivity including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The carsales judges said the winner of the Best First Car category has to be compact, easy to drive and park, and be safe for newcomers, but it also has to instil a sense of pride – after all you should love your first new car.

"With a price cap of $20,000 the segment is hotly contested and the car that most impressed in 2015 was ŠKODA's brand-new Fabia," said Marton Pettendy, Managing Editor at CarSales.

"The efficient 1.2-litre turbo-petrol ŠKODA Fabia runs on the smell of an oily rag but delivers big-car safety. Five stars, six airbags, autonomous braking -- all the boxes are ticked.

"The wee ŠKODA's ride and handling also impressed our expert judges and its cost to own and run figures stacked up along with the other all-important CarSales data points.

"But the icing on the cake for newbies is intuitive integration of technology. Instead of learning to use a new infotainment system, just plug in your smartphone and your apps are mirrored on the large, high-res touch-screen system.

"ŠKODA says it’s simply clever... And we have to agree. The CarSales Car of the Year Awards combine the expert opinion of the motoring.com.au team and industry standard setting data from Redbook.com.au, with cost to run, retained value, consumer engagement and affordability assessments to represent a true guide to the very best new cars in Australia.

One of the most handsome wagons on the market; unprecedented value for money; enormous cabin space; loads of features; turbo-four from Golf R; good ride and handling; plenty of new tech.
More expensive than Volkswagen's top-shelf Passat Alltrack (but more fun too); fuel consumption is high when you're on it.

So how do you go into the market and offer your product when your brand is not really well known? The answer is simple (or “Simply Clever” in Skoda speak): build your vehicle to compete with the front-runners in the pack and make it thousands of dollars cheaper to buy!

THE benefit of hindsight has allowed Redbook to hone Skoda's three-year retained value ratings from the highs of when the brand returned to Oz, to more believable numbers. Back then, Skodas were a Gold Star sure-thing.
